Om Peace Peace Peace, the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, & T.S. Eliot

The universal prayer Om Shanti Shanti Shanti (Om Peace Peace Peace) originates from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, appearing notably in Chapter 1, Section 3, Verse 28 as the conclusion to the Pavamana Mantra:

"From evil lead me to good. From darkness lead me to Light. From death lead me to Immortality."

The threefold repetition of "Peace" is understood to quiet disturbances from the body, the environment, and cosmic forces.

The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad introduces the method of Neti, Neti ("not this, not that"), conceiving the ultimate reality via process of elimination. This upanishad's legacy extended to the West through T.S. Eliot, who ended his poem The Waste Land with the its moral commands — Datta, Dayadhvam, Damyata (Give, Sympathize, Control) —  and the final invocation of "Shantih shantih shantih," which he equated to "the Peace which passeth understanding."
