What Is Combed Cotton?
Combed cotton is a soft, premium version of cotton made by specially treating the cotton fibers before they are spun into yarn. After the raw cotton is harvested, cleaned, and carded, it undergoes a mechanical combing process in which fine-toothed brushes pull through the material. This step extracts impurities and removes up to 20% of the shortest, weakest fibers. What remains are only the longest, strongest, and most uniform cotton strands, aligned in one direction. This strict refinement results in a more durable, noticeably smoother fabric with superior breathability, a luxurious hand-feel, and resistance to fraying and pilling.

1. How Combed Cotton Is Made
Combed cotton first undergoes the initial stages of ginning and carding. During carding, raw cotton is detangled and roughly aligned into a loose, continuous web known as a sliver. Carded slivers contain varying fiber lengths, tiny plant matter, and microscopic impurities. To achieve a premium grade, the material must pass through the combing stage.
During combing, a series of fine, mechanical brushes comb through the cotton sliver. This action physically strips away the shortest cotton fibers (often referred to as short staples) alongside any remaining dirt or neps (small fiber entanglements). By eliminating the short fibers, the process parallelizes the remaining long fibers perfectly. The resulting strand is clean, highly compact, and perfectly prepped to be spun into a fine, strong yarn.

The structural purity of combed cotton yields several highly desirable textile properties. Foremost among them is unparalleled softness. Because the short, prickly fiber ends have been extracted, the spun yarn has an incredibly smooth surface that feels gentle and luxurious against the skin.

Long fibers have a greater surface area to bond and twist together during the spinning process, creating a tightly woven yarn that resists snapping under tension. Furthermore, the absence of loose, short fibers dramatically reduces the fabric's tendency to pill—the annoying fuzz balls that form on the surface of garments after friction and repeated laundering. Finally, the uniform and dense surface of combed cotton provides an optimal, flat canvas for high-definition garment printing, allowing inks to bond evenly and display vibrant, photorealistic colors.
3. Combed Cotton vs. Carded Cotton
Cotton that never undergoes the combing phase is called carded cotton, which consists of a mix of short and long fibers. Carded cotton has a coarser texture more suitable for workwear or rugged streetwear with a structured drape.
Combed cotton, by contrast, is the refined upgrade. Though the two fabrics may begin from the exact same raw cotton, the combing transforms the substrate into a finer material.

Because of its gentle touch and refined drape, combed cotton is widely favored in industries where comfort and longevity are paramount. In the apparel sector, it is the substrate of choice for luxury dress shirts, premium retail t-shirts, high-quality knitwear, and athleisure garments. Its hypoallergenic properties and lack of coarse fibers also make it a staple in intimate undergarments and infant clothing, where protecting delicate skin is essential.
In home textiles, combed cotton is heavily utilized to craft fine bed linens, luxury sheets, and high-thread-count pillowcases. The fabric's natural breathability helps regulate body temperature, while its inherent strength ensures that the sheets maintain their softness and structural integrity through years of heavy laundering.
5. Why Combed Cotton Costs More
Producing combed cotton requires more time, labor, and specialized machinery than regular cotton. Furthermore, the combing process actively discards up to 20% of the raw material weight by removing the short fibers. This combination of increased processing time and raw material loss makes combed cotton more expensive to manufacture, commanding a higher wholesale and retail price point.
However, from a sustainability and consumer-value perspective, this upfront cost is often justified. Garments and linens made from combed cotton survive significantly longer before wearing out, losing their shape, or looking unkempt due to pilling. By extending the lifecycle of the textile, combed cotton provides a strong countermeasure to the environmentally destructive cycle of fast fashion. Additionally, the short fibers extracted during the combing process are rarely wasted; they are frequently recycled into lower-grade industrial textiles, non-wovens, or padding materials.
